Triacs are popularly used as a solid state replacement of relay for switching high power ac loads.

In a triac phase control circuit the triac is triggered on only for specific portions of the ac half cycles causing the load to operate only for that period of the ac waveform. My intention is to modernise the design but first i want it to be operational. This results in a controlled supply of power to the load. It will instantly switch on and close as soon as it s triggered and will remain closed as long as the supply voltage remains above zero volts or the supply polarity is not changed.

The triac is a bidirectional switching device that can control the ac power efficiently and accurately. The voltage supply reference vss is indeed below a1 or com which is connected to the mains reference line or neutral as shown in figure 6. These are often used in motor speed controllers ac circuits pressure control systems light dimmers and other ac control equipments.
