A 50 micron rated filter will allow larger particles to pass through than say a 5 micron rated filter. Ideally a water filter should let water molecules to pass while trapping other unwanted particles. It will be able to filter out that bacteria as well as anything larger than 1. The pore size of a filter cartridge is measured in microns. For example if bacteria in your water are 1 micron and you have a filtration system with a micron level of 1. As a general rule the smaller micron rating for a filter is better especially if you are on well water but as with most everything there is a trade off. While there are other smaller micron ratings those filters below 5 micron are prone to intense clogging or quick debris buildup. However any filter with a micron level greater than 1 will allow the bacteria to pass through and remain in your water. The smaller the micron rating the faster the filter fills up.

One micron filters will remove parasites from the water as well as a lot of but not all bacteria. Common micron ratings for filters are 100 75 50 25 10 5 1 and 0 5. Which size micron filter you need depends on the size of the smallest particle that needs filtering from your water.
